Prior to 29 June 2004 Monica was living a life just like any other child – happy, full of love, dreams, and fairy-tale heroes …

It all ended at 4:32 p.m. on 29 June 2004 … In a terrible car accident on Hemus highway heading Varna Monica's mother and 15-year old sister died on the spot. 10 days later in Pirogov hospital her father too passed away of his burns.

Monica spent months of reanimation at the Pirogov hospital in a “waking” coma. Two serious craniocerebral traumas, ruptured abdomen and liver, amputated right leg, contractures and other limbs crushed – this is just a small part of what the medical history states at the admission of Monica in the Children's reanimation at Pirogov hospital on 29 June 2004.

Today by a God's miracle Monica is recovering, already speaking, contact, positive, and wishing to stand on her feet again some day, to run and dance …

Her grandmother Nina, her grandfather Simeon, and her uncle are looking after her. The daily cares for her are far from those of the other children. They include everyday work with a remedial therapist, kinesitherapist, logopaedics specialist, psychologist, neurosurgeon, and neurologist, constant movement and exercises.

The most important steps for Monica now are to work on her speech and precision of the grip with the upper limbs, to start moving the ankle of her unimpaired leg (contracture), to strengthen the locomotory system and the muscles, and to succeed in stepping and standing of her leg supported by crutches. The next steps will be fitting a leg (prosthesis), rehabilitation of the upper limbs, etc.

The funds needed for the forthcoming rehabilitation procedures, operations, and prosthesis fitting abroad amount to over 80 000 Euro within the next 3-4 years.
